About the "Coton De Tulear"

Cotonelle Coton De Tulear

Origin: This breed was virtually unknown until it was introduced into Europe and North America 20 years ago. For centuries, the Coton was favored as a companion of the wealthy residents of Tulear, in southern Madagascar where, it continued to breed to type. It is known as "the Royal dog of Madagascar". The original Bison-type extended back possibly one thousand years ago or more. Although still rare, it has enjoyed

considerable popularity with the Madagascar upper-class for some years and is becoming increasingly popular in the United States and Canada. The breed was recognized by the FCI in 1970.

Description: Coton is the French word for Cotton. Like the name suggests the most conspicuous feature of the Coton de Tulear is it's coat, which is cottony or fluffy. It has a long top coat. The fluffy hair covers the lightly muscled body. Colours come in tan black and white and white. Some may have slightly Champaign markings on its body and ears.

Temperament: The Coton is very friendly, affectionate, and alert. They are very sociable dogs that get along well with children, other dogs and animals. Very attached to its home and master – wanting always to be in their presence and try their best to please. One of their most endearing traits is to jump and walk on their hind legs. Their teasing expression enhance any home willing to spend a few moments a day in necessary play and grooming routines.
